Summer Safety Tips

SUMMER SAFETY TIPS FROM THE NURSE

It is important to go outdoors and get plenty of fresh air. However, there are several things you need to consider.

Mosquitoes

Some mosquitoes can carry diseases that can make people sick. You can protect yourself by putting screens (repair any holes) on open doors and windows. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants at sunrise and after dusk.

Use bug spray with DEET and read directions on can. Don’t forget to empty things around the yard that contain stagnant water because they become a breeding ground for mosquitoes!

Ticks

Lyme disease is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected deer tick.  Early stage symptoms may include a rash, fatigue, fever, muscle and joint pain. In some cases, if left untreated, neurological or cardiac problems can result. Patients treated with antibiotics in the early stages usually result in a rapid and complete recovery. Visually, do a body and scalp check after outdoor activities. A shower is also recommended. Remove a tick with
tweezers by gently pulling it straight out as close to the skin as possible.  Wash area with soap and water then apply an antiseptic. Call physician for any follow up care. Don’t forget to check your pets!

Sun

Sunburn happens quickly. Even people who don’t burn can get skin damage from the sun. It is recommended that sunscreen of at least SPF15 be applied to exposed parts of your body. The ultra-violet rays are the strongest from 10am-2pm. Stay in the shade if possible during these hours or wear hats and lightweight long-sleeved shirts to protect yourself. The sun can also
damage the retina of the eye, so you should wear sunglasses with UV light protection. Don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids!

Hope you have a healthy and fun summer!!!!!
